Becoming A Lay Led Congregation: Leadership Transition

Trinity has started an exciting and challenging journey to reorganize our leadership systems to live out our mission and core values and become a more lay-led congregation.  Working from a plan recommended by the Leadership Waypoint Team and approved by Council, a Leadership Transition Team has been formed to bring these recommendations to life (John Wittenbraker, Teri Lanan, Barb Rodgers and Sandy Cottrell).

Several sub-teams have been formed, each working on one of the four leadership systems at Trinity:

Laity Sub-Team

This team is focusing on the recommendations for our laity and the ministries of our church:

  1. Organize ourselves as a lay-lead congregation
  2. Align our ministries to our values

They will organize and form leadership teams, each led by a lay person for our five new Ministry Hubs: Faith Formation, Worship, Christian Care, Fellowship, and Administration. Each of our 70+ ministries will belong into one of these five hubs to provide better coordination and support.

Members: John Wittenbraker, Brent Baxter, Meg Ehm, Katie Risser, and Vicki Seal

Council Sub-Team

This team is focusing on the recommendations for Council:

  1. Change the organization and function of Council
  2. Make Council more forward-thinking and proactive

They will develop a Council Policy Book to compile all the plans, processes and accountabilities of Trinity into one clear, accessible place so everyone knows how and why things are done at Trinity. They will also be working on tools and practices to help make Council more effective in the work they do.

Members: Sandy Cottrell, Teri Lanan, Gary Hatton, Jean Birenbaum, Warren Ditzler, Chuck Hertz, and John Han

Staff Sub-Team

This team is focusing on the recommendations for staff:

  1. Align staff to our ministry hubs

They will review our staff structure to evolve the staff so that our staff team is organized to best support our lay-led Ministry Hubs. This will involve moving some staff into new positions and managing the hiring and onboarding of new members needed to provide the support our congregation’s needs.

Members: Danette Griffith, Pastor Lutz, Chris Worrell, and HR Committee

Clergy Sub-Team

This team is focusing on the recommendations for the clergy:

  1. Enable pastors to focus on Word and sacrament, teaching, and pastoral care to build up the body of Christ for ministry

This team will recommend a structure for our clergy team and organize them and the rest of our leadership team so the clergy can focus on what they are uniquely called to do. They will be working with the Executive Committee and Council to discern the best structure for our clergy and manage the call process for an additional pastor.

Members: Barb Rodgers, Teri Lanan, Liz Ricketts, Cort Birenbaum, Carol Connor, and Pastor Lutz

This whole process will take 9 to 12 months to fully implement. The hubs will be rolled out one at a time across the fall and winter to give us a chance to learn along the way. The Faith Formation Hub will be first, followed closely by Worship, then the other three hubs. The Leadership Transition Team is committed to keeping the congregation informed about the progress, so keep an eye on the Lansdale Lutheran, the Weekly, and Trinity’s website for updates.
