What is Code Blue? During the winter season, Montgomery County regularly implements a winter weather, or “Code Blue”, emergency plan. In periods of extreme, life-threatening weather, defined as a wind-chill factor of 20°F or below, multiple County agencies and private health/social organizations will offer expanded services for those without adequate shelter, including the chronically homeless and homeless families with children. The goal of the Code Blue plan is to provide temporary shelter, food and clothing to those in need.
Because of the frigid temperatures and the number of snow/ice events our area has experienced since late November, our Code Blue season has started out with a bang! If the start of January is any indication, the remainder of our season will be quite busy. We have relied so heavily on our volunteers who staff our shelter so that the men in need have a warm and dry place to stay. With the potential for so many more shelter hours, we are desperately seeking other volunteers who can help to lighten the load with the staffing needs of the shelter:
Intake: 7:30 pm to Midnight
Overnight: Midnight to 6 am
Breakfast/Cleanup: 6 am to 8 am
We have a particular need for male volunteers (all shifts)as the shelter cannot open without at least one male volunteer scheduled on each shift. If you are hesitant to sign up because you are new to this ministry and unsure what to do, please keep in mind that there are many volunteers who have done this often and would happily provide “on the job training”! Please talk to your friends and family about this serving opportunity as we have volunteers from all over our community, not just Trinity. Please contact to request further information.
